Rockwell Automation to Acquire Clearpath Robotics to Boost Autonomous Industrial Robotics

Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, has announced its plans to acquire Clearpath Robotics Inc., a leader in autonomous robotics for industrial applications. This acquisition aims to strengthen Rockwell Automation’s position in the autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) market and further the development of the Connected Enterprise.

One of the biggest challenges in manufacturing is the transportation of parts and materials to assembly lines and between manufacturing cells. This process is often inefficient and can lead to production bottlenecks. By integrating Clearpath’s OTTO Motors Division, which offers AMRs and fleet management and navigation software, Rockwell Automation aims to transform production logistics and improve operational efficiency.

Clearpath’s AMRs and software solutions increase throughput and reduce costs by ensuring that components and subassemblies are delivered to the right place at the right time. They also transport finished goods to trucks or warehouses upon completion. Combined with Rockwell Automation’s existing partnerships in fixed robotic arms, solutions like Independent Cart Technology, and leadership in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), the addition of OTTO Motors’ capabilities will create a comprehensive portfolio of advanced material handling solutions.

The market for AMRs in manufacturing is projected to grow by approximately 30% per year over the next five years, with an estimated market size of $6.2 billion by 2027. This acquisition is expected to contribute to Rockwell Automation’s revenue growth in fiscal 2024.

By leveraging the data from Rockwell Automation’s offerings and OTTO Motors’ AMRs, the company plans to develop artificial intelligence-powered information management applications. These applications will enable autonomous execution and optimization, increase efficiency, and allow for real-time adjustments and traceability in manufacturing processes. The combined technology will also enhance Kalypso’s production logistics consulting practice.

The CEO of Clearpath, Matt Rendall, expressed excitement about joining Rockwell Automation and helping expand its leadership position in advanced material handling. The integration of autonomous technology is expected to create safer and more productive workplaces.

Clearpath Robotics, founded in 2009, initially provided robotics technology to global research and development markets. In 2015, the company launched its OTTO Motors Division.

Overall, the acquisition of Clearpath Robotics by Rockwell Automation will accelerate the development of autonomous industrial robotics and further advance the vision of the Connected Enterprise.
