After nearly two decades, fans of the F-Zero racing series can rejoice as Nintendo brings back the beloved franchise with a new online multiplayer battle royale game called F-Zero 99. Following in the footsteps of other successful battle royale games like Super Mario Bros. 35 and Tetris 99, F-Zero 99 allows players to compete against up to 98 others in a frantic race to be the last Captain Falcon standing.
Originally released in 1990 for the Super Nintendo, the F-Zero series was known for its fast-paced and futuristic racing gameplay. However, the franchise has been dormant since the release of F-Zero Climax on the Game Boy Advance in 2004. Fans of the series have had to rely on appearances of Captain Falcon in Smash Bros. games to keep their love for the franchise alive.
Although F-Zero 99 is not a full remake or remaster of the original game, it does feature all the iconic carts and tracks that fans remember. The game will be available for free to those with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, allowing players to jump into multiplayer races with friends and strangers alike.
While it may not satisfy fans’ hopes for a fully revived F-Zero experience, the release of F-Zero 99 gives us hope that Nintendo is considering reviving other long-dormant franchises. Perhaps characters from these forgotten games, like Captain Falcon, who have also made appearances only in Smash Bros., will soon receive the attention they deserve.
F-Zero 99 will be available to play on Nintendo Switch Online starting today, allowing fans to reconnect with the classic racing game and experience the thrill of the futuristic tracks once again.
